History
LIFE CENTER’S STORY
Life Center is a recognized provider of long-standing quality in-home services for people with disabilities in Genesee, Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties since 1982.
The past thirty years have brought many achievements in the lives of those we support. Through the incorporation of the principles of Self-Determination and Gentle Teaching, we have helped people live the lives they have chosen while feeling safe and valued. Our commitment to these principles led to the development of our Mentoring Program, which in turn allowed us to assist individuals to live successfully once in the community and not behind institutional walls. The agency has had a significant impact on the lives of our most vulnerable citizens and has been recognized as an agency that does extraordinary things to empower individuals with disabilities.
Thirty years does not seem like an inordinate amount of time to many, but to families whose lives have been touched by a son or daughter, sister or brother, or other loved one with a disability, thirty years is a milestone! As an agency whose mission is to help people pursue their dreams by overcoming barriers and promoting a full life, Life Center has much to celebrate. Life Center’s historical ability to continually move forward in a progressive, positive, and pioneering manner has allowed the agency to open doors and provide supports to many people.
What’s New?
As a part of Life Center’s commitment to touch more lives, the agency recently merged with Neighborhood Residential recognizing a shared philosophy, mission, and vision. Neighborhood Residential is a longstanding provider of services in Macomb and Oakland counties. The organization was incorporated in 1991 and has grown steadily over the years through its contracts with MORC, Inc. Neighborhood Residential has been recognized for its use of pet and art therapy to enhance communication with individuals and build trusting, safe relationships. As an outgrowth of this process, Neighborhood Residential has embraced the creation of a culture of gentleness as an intrinsic part of its approach.
